Honouring Your Time and Worth

My focus at the moment is ‘honouring my time and worth’. It came up at a work conference and then I realised how much it applies to life and parenting too.
It’s really made me think about the work I do, what I charge, my own self worth and how that affects my pricing. As well as how I act socially and with family.
It doesn’t matter if you run a business, run the home or work for someone else, we all need to recognise our value and time. …

How a New Arrival in the Family can Affect Your Insurance

People who have recently become mums and dads will no doubt have to contend with quite a few changes to their daily routine, including sleeping times and alterations to your work/life balance. With all this to think about, it can be easy to overlook other ways a new arrival can affect your life – including your home insurance policy and other forms of cover – but taking a bit of time to take these adjustments into account can save you a lot of hassle in the future!
First of all, it’s …

Parenting Rights: Should they be equal?

I’ve just been reading an article in The Guardian about whether mothers and fathers should have equal rights when it comes to parenting after seperation.
“Fathers and mothers should be entitled to a legally binding presumption of shared parenting”. From the article this appears to relate to certain rights post seperation including access rights, although the government is “not in favour of giving seperated parents rights to equal time”. This leaves it all rather vague as to what exactly they mean by a legally binding presumption of …

What makes a great mum?

Feeling a bit sentimental today so I’m posting this video. My friend Tara made it – it’s all about what makes a great mum.

Five Things My Kids Have Taught Me

Guest post by Keris
I knew that having children would be a life-changing experience, but I was thinking sleepless nights, worry, going out with sick on my shoulder. I didn’t realise they’d teach me things like this:
Slow down
I remember rushing Harry to along one day, constantly telling him to get a move on. He was looking at the moss on the wall, studying the traffic lights, gazing up at planes. Eventually I realised we weren’t actually in a hurry and that I’d find it much less stressful to go at …

Parenting Predictions for 2010

My predictions for parenting in the new decade.
1. A return to home parties
Everyone’s still skint because of th credit crunch, add to that the fashion of ‘homemade and I reckon birthday parties in the home are destined for a big return. The cool kids are already doing it.

2. A continuation of having breastfeeding rammed down our throats (excuse the pun)
In the 70′s and 80′s it was fashionable to bottlefeed, in the noughties it’s become fashionable to breastfeed and woe betide anyone who decides not to.
3. Demise …

Will you give financial support in adulthood?

Money and kids always make interesting discussions, from the pocket money debate (how much, when, and for what) to whether you’d be willing to support children into adulthood.
I was financially independant from the age of sixteen and moved out completely when I was seventeen and I’ve never moved back. This is probably not un unusual scenario for past generations however with the cost of living rising and the difficulty young people face in getting a mortgage this has all changed and it’s far more common to hear of people …

Woman Escapes Jail to Breastfeed

Background Story
A woman who smashed a glass bottle into the eye of a man, leaving him partially blinded has escaped jail as she claimed that only she could look after her baby as she is breastfeeding. The woman’s health visitor said that she didn’t know how the baby would react to formula or feeding from a cup or bottle.
Although woman are able to give birth in prison and care for their babies there, this scenario is not allowed post birth.
The Sherriff handed down a sentence of 300 …

Benign Neglect

Guest Post by ‘mum of teens’
When I read this article by Joanna Simmons in The Times on Saturday a couple of weekends ago, it was as if a million light bulbs had gone off in my head.
Benign neglect is what I’ve been trying valiantly to achieve in our household for the last 18 years. A state of play where there is equal value placed on the general enjoyment of the adults as well as the children.
Where life is not all about jumping up to satisfy their every whim immediately …

Skip >> Depressing Personal Stuff

It’s been a strange few weeks to say the least, there was the VIP Disney Trip followed by the excitement of a pregnancy, the desperation of a second miscarriage (in three months) and the confusion of packing in my job and becoming ‘self employed’ (code for housewife or stay at home mum, I prefer the latter, less ironing).
There were a couple of days where it all felt a bit much, but I drew on the support of my husband, family and friends (which includes all my friends online, if I …

Everything is Okay

Michelle left a comment, she noticed that I’d been AWOL, I’m back to explain myself!
Well, as you can see I’m still here, and still blogging. I’ve celebrated a birthday and have been inspired to change a few things, they are quite big things and it’s taking time,I should be honest too and say that I’ve been indulging in quite a bit of poker recently (and winning yay!).
Whats changing…?
Em, where to start really, I’ve been working a lot on Project 500 as well as the freelance project that kicked off …

The Future of Work for Mums

Today I’m wondering if there is a sea of change in the world of work for mums.
A very rudimentary timeline;
Pre-1980′s (?) Mums stayed at home to look after children, whilst father earned the ‘daily bread’.
1980′s – Noughties Mums managed careers and family simultaneously. Supposedly ‘having it all’.
The Future
The landscape is changing, many mums are accepting that they wish to be a stay at home parent, if not in full, then in part. Mums also accept that they a) cannot survive on one wage and b) have ambitions of …

Save Money with a Toddler

A while back I wrote an article about keeping costs low as a new mum, it’s time to update that article with ideas suitable for toddlers and the parents of.
Food
Milk
We moved from powder milk to full fat milk as soon as Erin was 12 months (recommended earliest age). Not only is the carton milk cheaper it’s also ready made – our mornings became that little bit smoother as a result.
Breakfast
I buy weetabix in bulk packets, for non weetabix days we have granary toast. These options are inexpensive and …
