Stranger than Fiction

Plot in 25 words or less…Man discovers his life is being narrated and is a character in a to-be-finished novel. Novellist is renowned for writing tragic deaths.

Positive…Great cast including Emma Thompson, Will Ferrell, Dustin Hoffman and Maggie Gyllenhaal. They definitely made the film more bearable

Negative...Perhaps a little too strange for me.

Score… Alex gave it 3.5/5 I gave it 2.5/5. Overall score 6/10

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Plot in 25 words or less…
Furry animals try to save furry friend. Adventure with danger occurs. Main characters have a baby. Everyone lives happily ever after. Obviously.

Positive…
Fun for kids, some adult funnies in there too. Excellent animation

Negative…Story is pretty weak, especially after Up. Squirrel and nut scenes are very irritating, enough already.

Score…I give it 3/5. Alex gives it 2.5/5. Overall score 5.5/10

Hancock

Plot in 25 words or less… Alcoholic super hero disliked by public turns image around with help from PR exec. Sort of happy ever after.

Positive… Second half is much better than first owing to an excellent twist in the story.

Negative….
Could have been much better if audience was provided a bit more backstory. Not enough introductory content to feel anything for characters.

Score… I give it 2.5/5. Alex gives it 2/5. Overall score is 4.5/10

The Simpsons Movie

Plot in 25 words or less…
Homer pollutes the lake, government quarantines springfield. The Simpsons go on the run to Alaska, before returning to save the town.

Positive… Suitable for the whole family

Negative… We got quite bored after 45 minutes or so, I don’t think it lended itself that well to a feature length film.

Score…I give it 2/5. Alex gives it 2/5. Overall score is 4/10

UP Disney Digital 3D: Review + Trailer

By Little Mummy, July 1, 2009 1:00 pm

Okay listen up people, you’ve got to go and see Up when it comes out, 3D or otherwise you won’t be disappointed. As far as these modern animated films go this is by far the best storyline I’ve seen so far, the 3D may add another dimension, literally, however this film stands up well enough without gimmicks.

In the first ten minutes, friendship, marriage, miscarriage and death had all been covered in a short montage, be ready for some difficult questions, much of it went over Erin’s head at three, older children will take in a lot more.

The story follows a septuagenerian named Mr Frederickson who loses his wife and soulmate and ultimately faces losing his home, this is where the film really gets going and the more fantastical part of the plot kicks in which takes Mr Frederickson and various sidekicks on an adventure of a lifetime. The plot turns serious again when you realise that the whole adventure has been an outlet for Mr Frederickson’s grief which eventually forces him to move on with his life.

Take your tissues, I never thought a ‘cartoon’ could be so moving, I was stunned to find out that even my husband had had to choke back a tear. The issues were covered beautifully without being too heavy for younger viewers whilst providing some ‘meat’ for parents.

I’d go as far as to say this is the best film I’ve seen this year and, for me, ranks beside The Dark Knight and Little Miss Sunshine, high praise indeed, but well deserved.

Mamma Mia & The Dark Knight

By Little Mummy, August 21, 2008 1:16 pm

Phew… it’s been busy round here.  Between work and childcare we’ve had an impromptu family visit, the highlight of which was a ten hour long jaunt to the casino :)   I’ve also taken in two movies, Mamma Mia and The Dark Knight, here’s what I made of them…

Mamma Mia

Well I was pretty sure in the first fifteen minutes that I would NOT make it to the end of this spectacle.  All singing, all dancing, 100% cheese it was a little to much…and then…I dunno…I just kinda got into it, I embraced the cheese and started to enjoy the impromptu singing…all except Pierce Brosnan, Pierce you are hot hot hot! But you CAN NOT and SHOULD NOT sing, it was a bridge too far.  Overall though, a lot of fun.

The Dark Knight

Wow! This one knocked my socks off, or rather one very special performance knocked my socks off.  The late Heath Ledger as The Joker was truly awesome, perhaps one of the best characterizations I’ve ever seen! The action scenes and effects were amazing and the storyline was thick with psychological drama.  The only disappointment was the weak part of the leading lady, the usually excellent Maggie Gyllenhaal had little to work with, with a script which was very thin and saw her appear in only a few scenes one of which a very cheesey “thanks for saving me” scene with Batman, a little too Lois Lane for my liking.  Overall, a must see.
