The Guru has been a favourite of ours for over 10 years. The restaurant itself isn’t anything to shout about but the food, oh the food.. well that’s delicious and great value too.

The Guru has been a favourite of ours for over 10 years. The restaurant itself isn’t anything to shout about but the food, oh the food.. well that’s delicious and great value too.

The last time I went with my mum. We’d been to see the new version of Wuthering Heights which was quite frankly hell, how we managed to last for whole 45 mins I’ll never know. After creeping out part way through we needed something good to cheer us up and The Guru is always a safe bet. You’ve probably guessed that it’s an Indian restaurant which serves everything you’d expect from an Indian.

The staff are always wonderful and really attentive. For starter we shared a mixed pakora and poppadums with all the chutneys and oniony bits. The portions are huge so we got a chicken tikka balti korma which is one of the specials. I actually really love the dopiaza too but my stomach is a bit sensitive at the moment! We also had a pilau rice and the largest garlic naan you’ve ever seen – my mum stuck her hand up against it so you could get a good idea of just how big it was.

The bill came in at under £30 and we left with a doggy bag for Alex (yes, one curry fed three people that night!) and feeling like we’d had a bargain. Remains a family favourite and we would give it a good 8/10

Christmas was pretty hectic with Alex working many of the days, however we did have a couple of respite days in between Christmas and New Year and on one of our days off we took Erin along to a ballet workshop at the newly refurbished museum of Scotland.
We headed up to the learning centre where the Scottish Ballet were running workshops for girls and boys 3-9yrs. The one we were at was pretty busy with not far off twenty little girls (no boys at this one), some sporting ballet shoes and leotards, others like Erin were just in comfortable clothes.

The workshops are designed to encourage the children to listen and respond to music and are accompanied by a keyboardist and a variety of other instruments. It was obvious that many of the girls were already at ballet classes but ballet experience wasn’t necessary.

I didn’t sit in on the workshop too long as I didn’t want to put them off but what I saw looked fun. The girls were all pretending to be different characters and jumping and creeping – all were having a really good time.

At £6 for an hour I would definitely check out the workshops – the last lot were advertised on the museum website.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the size and shape of the screen – it’s noticeably bigger, with a slight concave curve to it. As soon the trailers started, I was pretty much sold on the technology. The screen quality is markedly better in comparison to a regular cinema screen. If you’ve ever upgraded your CRT Television to a Full HD Flatscreen, it’s the same kind of thing on a bigger scale. The seats are closer to the screen because of this, which makes for a more immersive experience. When the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises played, I had goosebumps, and immediately decided that I’d be seeing it in IMAX when it is released.

We were there to see Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Definitely a good choice to show off the capabilities of IMAX: Big action scenes, swooping skyline shots, and explosions. When a building blows up you’ll be dodging out the way of flying bricks. When Tom Cruise looks over the side of the world’s tallest building vertigo kicks in, and your

stomach lurches. As well as this a new sound system has been installed in the wall panelling, using some sort of fancy laser technology. It’s a real step up in audio quality – you even hear the difference when the movie is silent as there’s no background hum or hiss, so you could hear a pin drop.

So far so good then, but what are the drawbacks? Well, I really don’t see much value in IMAX for anything that isn’t a big action movie – This isn’t going to add a great deal to your average rom-com for example. The big one for me is cost. The IMAX screen in Edinburgh will, at least initially, cost an extra £4.30 on top of your regular ticket price, which is £8.30 for an adult. That’s a total cost of £12.60, which I’m sure you’ll agree isn’t exactly cheap. It’d have to be something I REALLY wanted to see – as I mentioned I’d fork out the extra for The Dark Knight Rises, and a few other select action franchises, but at that price I’d definitely be picky.

We saw a little boy who must have been about eight or nine scaling the wall right to the top, we stood open mouthed, I decided there and then I wouldn’t be attempting to heave my lardy ass up even a few feet, I think I’ll leave it to the professionals.

Deep Sea World comprises several large open fish tanks, tropical aquariums, educational docks with interactive displays and the main attraction, an underwater conveyor belt that takes you well below sea level and surrounds you with shark amongst other fish. Apparently the acrylic used in the tunnel is the same as that used by NASA in space shuttles, and can withstand two African elephants, which is reassuring, the largest shark we saw must have been around 10ft long.

<img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1229/1481617267_ea9eebcaf8_t.jpg" width="100" height="75" alt="Deep Sea World Ticket"align="right" />

Erin loved it, the fish in the open tanks ended up being at eye level for her so she was able to view freely. She enjoyed the underwater tunnel, but I think her favourite were the seals, she whooped and squealed as they hauled their blubbery bodies out of the water for another herring.

It was a lovely couple of hours but at £10 per adult (Erin was free), I felt it was quite expensive and will need to be an occasional treat.

It’s been a busy holiday and today was no exception. Gorgie Farm is one of those places you pass all the time and always say about going but never get around to it.
Well, today was different, our Edinburgh Under Fives book gave it a good write up, especially for younger children, so off we set – well actually it’s only about a ten minute drive away.
Well, today was different, our Edinburgh Under Fives book gave it a good write up, especially for younger children, so off we set – well actually it’s only about a ten minute drive away. The farm, being in the city centre, was more comprehensive than I had expected. The array of animals included hens, goats, sheep, a snake, ponies, pigs, birds, guinea pigs and rabbits. There was also a small play park with picnic area and a farm shop.

<img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/191/518621331_eecccbc2be_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Erin and Alex at the pond"align="right" />
There was plenty to see and do, and on a warmer day we could have easily spent a couple of hours. Today was a little chilly so we introduced Erin to the animals and their respective noises, she really enjoyed it and started trying to make the noises herself, we left after about 45 minutes knowing we would definitely be back! Did I mention that admission was free (there is a donation box)!
We took Erin and her friend along to Molly’s Play Centre which is situated on the top floor of Ocean Terminal in Leith.
To be honest it was a bit of a punt, as we weren’t sure if 15 month old Erin and her 10 month old friend would be old enough to really enjoy the delights of soft play. We needn’t have worried. They were right in there, clambering over the colourful blocks, crawling after one another, enjoying the views and swimming in the ball pool. ...

It only cost a pound for Erin and her friend was free! For two tired, happy babies, that’s extremely good value.

Today’s outing was to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. We had been before, but never with Erin…
So do toddlers and galleries mix?
Yes, Erin loved it. The exhibits included a ball dispay – 1000 balls of all shapes and sizes scattered in a huge room. The exhibit was interactive but apparently they had too many parents (!) getting over excited! It’s a shame I’d have liked a kick about

The highlights for Erin were the stripey floored room – a room in which the floor was covered in migraine inducing multi-coloured vinyl tape and the ball room where she liked the echo of her voice.

The gallery and staff were, as the book stated, very child friendly.

Great morning out and definitely one to revisit in a couple years time.

For christmas I received a book voucher from my brother. I bought two books, one of which was Edinburgh for Under Fives.
This book is Fab (with a capital F!!). It’s basically a directory of Edinburgh written by parents for parents. It covers everything a mum (or dad) living in Edinburgh requires, from local attractions to eateries suitable for the littl’uns, nurseries and healthcare info. Jam-packed. We couldn’t wait to get started on the crux of the book, which is the attractions or ‘places to go’ ...

Jam-packed. We couldn’t wait to get started on the crux of the book, which is the attractions or ‘places to go’ part.

<img id="image582" src="http://www.littlemummy.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/134277333_458045bb7d_m.JPG" alt="134277333_458045bb7d_m.JPG"align="left" />

We set off for The Dean Gallery via sainsburys at blackhall for a sausage buttie and a coffee (very nice, and reasonably priced too!).

We enjoyed the Dean Gallery a lot, it was Erin’s first foray into the world of modern art and she seemed to enjoy it until the peace and tranquility sent her to sleep. Accurately noted by the book, the highlights were Paolozzi’s Vulcan and his restored studio. The gift shop was great, and the only disappointment was upstairs being closed as they were changing exhibitions. A great mini trip, that was absolutely free.

Ten out of ten for the book so far
