Musselburgh Races & Luca’s

Musselburgh is located just outside Edinburgh and is home to Musselburgh Raceourse and Luca’s Ice Cream Parlour. Every year we attend the Royal Scots family day which is usually at the end of September.

We started our day with breakfast at Luca’s ice cream parlour, one of two Luca’s cafes around Edinburgh (the other is in morningside). Alex had a mix and match breakfast, I had my favourite – eggs benedict and Erin had pancakes and maple syrup. The food is always good at Luca’s and it’s great value too. Three breakfasts and coffees and orange juice cost just under £16.

We marched toward the races alongside the Royal Scots Band who piped and drummed their way in driving rain. They hit a few bum notes this year but it’s a wonder they could play at all the weather was so bad.

At the races the kids can enjoy rides, trampolines, bouncy castles and face painting which is all included in the ticket price. Adults can enjoy the bar and the chance to win some money. We lost this year with just a miserable each way bet on a third place which netted us the grand total of £9.75. Oh well, you can’t win them all. Alex’s ‘hot tip’ named Hot Rod Mamma was never in it, which is good because I didn’t much fancy shouting ‘come on hot rod’ and ‘you can do it hot rod’ from the stands.

A great day out for all the family. Find a list of future race meetings here.
