The Co-operative: So much more than a convenience store!

30 March 2011 No Comment

Tell me I'm not the only one that thought the co-op was a handy place to go and buy a jar of coffee when you're in a pinch!

My eyes have been opened, apparently The Co-operative (to use its full title) is so much more than just a convenience store.  Of course there are the food shops, but The Co-operative was first established by a group of people from Rochdale, who've become known as the 'Rochdale Pioneers'.  The Rochdale Pioneers started the first ever co-operative back in 1844, since then the Co-op has developed into the financial, pharmaceutical as well as grocery industries amongst others.

The co-operative prides itself on its heritage and every year supports thousand of initiatives both in the UK and abroad.  One such initiative is The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers.  This co-operative initiative offers mentoring to young people by providing sporting activities.  The volunteers can gain qualifications during their time with StreetGames and many volunteers like Jamie go on to develop their skills for a chosen career.

Jamie, a teenager from Northumberland has grabbed the opportunity with both hands and not only teaches urban dance five times a week but is also about to start a BTEC in Dance, Health and Social Care and Business.  Her dream is to pursue a career in community dance.

StreetGames is just one initiative, others include inner-city beekeepers, a cumbrian village powering their village by wind and a film academy helping young people to pursue their ambition of working in the film industry.

Do you have a great idea for a co-operative initiative?  If you do then you can Join the revolution and Get involved here.
