24. Go on a Ski-ing Holiday

31 October 2010 12 Comments

No I haven’t completed another of my 100 things, but I have started thinking and planning for no. 24 Go on a ski-ing holiday.

We’re lucky to live just five minutes from an excellent dry ski slope which used to be Europe’s longest but I’m not sure if that’s still the case. The video below is me back on ski’s after a few years not ski-ing at all. Keep you’re eyes on the left hand side..

Erin can take ski lessons on that slope from six so ideally we’d like to do a ski holiday when she’s seven or eight. I’d love to learn to snowboard during the holiday and try skidooing, then spend evenings in front of an open fire eating fondue. I can picture it now…

I’ve done a bit of research on family ski holidays. I’ve looked into Canada (expensive) and ski holidays in France (good but not very exotic?), at the moment the jury’s out on the exact destination, but hey we have a few years to decide!

Do you go on ski holidays? What destinations would you recommend?

I’ve been skiing a couple of times, but my husband is the ski buff of the family, having been since knee-high. We’re trying to do the same with our kids, and took them for the first time this year, and are doing the same next year. If you are going with kids, France is always a good bet, as it is not too far to travel, and because of the number of Brits there, there is good provision for both skiing and non-skiing children.
If you are going without kids, I guess the world is your oyster, and personally I’ve always wanted to go to some of the less well-known resorts, as I hate the crowded pistes in France!

You should add Austria to the list – great resorts like St Anton and Ischgl, great skiing, great ski school and all very well thought out

We’re skiing without ours until they’re a little bigger but will than be taking them probably to Ischgl

OMG the last time I went on a ski holiday I damaged my coccyx. I now have regular reminder that I suck at skiing every time I get in absolute pain for sitting down more than 20 min in the same position… So no more skiing holidays for me, I will stick to the mulled wine :)

JulieB – Maybe we should do a family ski-ing hol then go on an adults only one then….*scuttles off to check bank balance*

Muddling – Never heard of either of those resorts, will need to do some research.. Cheers

Peggy – Oh no, I have quite a low coccyx so I guess I could be at risk of doing damage too.

There are lots of good ski holiday options out there. And you can get some really good deals. If you’re on a budget there are also some cheap ways to travel and get great discounts. Don’t give up – its the best fun around.

When we lived in Bosnia we used to take the boys skiing all the time (Bosnia hosted the Winter Olympics in 1984, they have some unexpectedly good and very cheap skiing!). We found that after the age of 3 1/2 or so the boys really got into it. Totally recommend it as a holiday – especially if there are regular hot chocolate stops.

I’d recommend Bosnia (especially the resorts outside of Sarajevo) but it is prohibitively expensive to get there. Once you are there it isn’t expensive (comparatively).

Interesting, will definitely bear that in mind.

I can really recommend Poiana Brasov in Romania….cheap, great snow and the instructors are all amazing!
