Monsters Inc. on Blu Ray

This is a guest post by my fabulous new employee blog partner BigDaddy

Having recently received a Blu-Ray player I was keen to see what all the fuss was about. As Erin was around I chose Monsters Inc. which was sent to us buy Disney a few months ago. I don?t think she would have enjoyed The Matrix!

In my opinion this is Disney/Pixar?s finest hour. It broke new ground in animation, (it was the first to make fur believable). It takes the universal theme of Monsters hiding in your cupboard when you were a kid and adds a cool, original twist (there are!) They come from a world called Monstropolis and they depend on children?s screams for their energy. Think British Gas but less scary! I let out a big scream when the gas bill comes in!

The story begins with James P Sullivan (or ?sully? to his monster mates, a 7ft tall blue furry monster voiced by John Goodman) & Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal, a short green guy with one huge eye and Erin?s favourite). They are the top scaring team at Monsters Inc., but when Sully discovers a closet door at his station after finishing time he investigates and inadvertently commits the biggest no-no in Monstropolis, he lets a child in. His plain old monster life is turned upside down by ?Boo?, a cute two year old with bunches in her hair??.that the monsters are terrified by! What follows is 80 minutes of rip roaring action, comedy, mystery, suspense and a twist that most ?grown up? thrillers could only dream of, as the boys try to return Boo to her bedroom safely.

Now, I was sceptical whether Blu-Ray could improve an already spectacular looking film but I was quite amazed at just how much better it looks and feels. The colours are more vibrant, the detail almost leaps of the screen and you see things in the background of every scene that enrich the whole movie experience and almost make you feel that you are watching a new film. The sound quality is also crystal clear even through your T.V. speakers and I can only imagine it on a 7.1 surround sound system, going to the cinema may almost be unnecessary.

After watching Monsters Inc. and experiencing Blu-Ray (and it is an experience) I immediately hatched a plan to sell all my DVD?s and replace them with Blu-Ray, even if it means having less movies in my collection! People who know me and have just read that may think I have gone temporarily insane but trust me, it?s THAT good!

The bonus features on Blu-Ray are also way more substantial than a standard DVD, with multi-angle documentaries, short films and even games.

Trust me people, Blu-Ray is the future and in the hands of the creative genius that is Disney/Pixar, it will give home family movies a new lease of life. They come up with movies that other animation studios could only DREAM of making. They are original, funny, smart, touching, sad, happy and truly multi-generational all at once. Ogres and penguins can only look on with jealousy as the ?House with the Mouse? keeps upping their game.

?We scare because we care? is this movies tag line; well they make movies I care about! Look out for my next review of UP, coming soon

I have to admit that I have noticed a difference on Blu Ray, but what I wasn’t expecting was the increased sound quality, which is also much clearer.

There is definetely a difference btween dvds and blu-ray discs. Couldn’t believe it at first, but I had to admit “defeat”. Thanks for the info about Monsters Inc. It’s my favourite Disney movie. Ciao. A
