Six Blog Tips For Busy Mums
Write Ideas Down Straight Away
I get a lot of ideas last thing at night and first thing in the morning, regardless of when you get your ideas ensure you write them down or you risk losing them forever.
Write Posts at Naptime
This has always worked for me as it coincides with my best writing time, other alternatives include getting up earlier to blog or as a lot of parent bloggers do, go to bed later (eek!)
Finish Posts Before Reading Other Blogs
Don’t get suckered into reading your 100 blog strong RSS feed until you’ve finished your own posts. This is procrastination blog-stylee.
Write Posts in Advance
A classic tip that works especially well for mums as we don’t know when the next bout of teething will keep us from our second biggest passion in life is to write posts in advance and either schedule them to be published at a specific time using the date stamp in wordpress or publish them manually on the right day.
Don’t Get OSCD – Obesssive Stat Checking Disorder
This is a serious time suck and if you don’t want your blog to become sad and neglicted don’t even go there. Seriously. Beware. Steer clear of over analysing unique visitors and pageviews, spend your time writing good content instead.
Choose Only One or Two Social Media Sites
Choose one or two and focus all your time there, I enjoy twitter and facebook, for you it may be MySpace and del.ici.ous. The old adage rings true it’s quality not quantity that counts when it comes to these sites.

I'm a 27 year old mum to 4 year old Erin. We live just outside Edinburgh in a small rural village.
I've been blogging for four years and write about anything and everything that takes my fancy.

Very useful, and so obvious (when someone points it out anyway)! The unexpected ‘next bout of teething’ has probably been the downfall of many a meticulous plan.
Great tips, especially the one about writing ideas down straight away. I try not to worry about ideas for posts but I do write them down when I think of something. Recently I decided to take a much more relaxed attitude to blogging and enjoy it rather than stressing about it. Since then I have found I have actually written more posts rather than less. Taking the pressure off myself seems to have helped!
Good advice Rosie, I get a bit obsessive about new hobbies and stuff, I think it’s in my nature.
excellent tips, i usually have one or two writing days a week and try to write most of my posts then and schedule them or I’d never find the time.
I’ve recently begun writing several posts at the weekend, as I find I’m busy in the week with emails and reading blogs…oh yes and twitter
I always seem to have ten ideas on the go or nothing. If I could add anything to this list it would be not to put pressure on yourself to come up with something new every day/every 2 days. If I’ve got lots of comments on a post I leave it to run. Likewise, if I can’t think of anything to say!!
Hi Erica,
Just been having a lovely trawl through your blog. The guest post vlog made me a wee bit homesick – I went to school outside Edinburgh too, so it’s lovely to hear the accent. You don’t hear it much down here in Buckinghamshire!
Loved the blog tips too – I tend to do mine at hideous o’clock in the morning, when my vampire children wake up.
Hi,
I’m originally from Wales, but I do have quite a Scottish accent now
[...] Mum Blogger E-course (which we plugged way back in November), Little Mummy has put together her Six Blog Tips for Busy Mums – brilliant! So if you think you might be suffering from OSCD or know you’re a bit of a blog [...]
I am a big fan of writing in advance – if I can get a quiet period then I can start up a few posts and hone them when I’ve time and then get them set up to post over the course of the coming days, takes a lot of the pressure off
Would also add in that try and find a way to blog away from your laptop, being able to jot things down on my phone and then tidy them up later works really well for me (and tapping on a phone is easier whilst feeding than typing on a laptop)
