You thought breastfeeding/making up bottles was hard, and then you have to feed them ‘real’ food with mixed success. Bread and fruit have been Erin’s staple during the lean times when nothingelse would pass her lips.

Fruit ticks the big three;

Quick To Prepare

Easy (for them) To Eat

Healthy

My top five are as folows;

1. Grapes

In first place, grapes, Erin’s favourite. Pull off the stalk, rinse and serve (chop in half if you must).

2. Strawberries

In season, half price in many supermarkets, and another hot favourite.

3. Dried Apricots

Healthy and sweet, these are a fab alternative to sugary treats.

4. Pineapple

Bit more effort on the preparation front, but Erin loves it, so who am I to begrudge a little chopping!

5. Dried Mango

My mother in law discovered these in a health food shop, even the dog loves them!

What are the favourites in your house?

If I may be so bold, I’d also recommend Dried Dates - just take a look at the nutritional info next time you pass the dried fruit in the shop … my kids go mad for them!

You may Alasdair :) Dried dates, never tried them, I’ll need to get some, are they not really high in iron?

I’m also going to try mandarin oranges now she’s a bit older.

Richelle - I think Erin would take strawberries and grapes over chocolate! It’s good stuff when you can give them some thing they *love* which is also healthy, it feels kinda sneaky lol

dried carnberries - they are sweetened so only get half marks for health benefits but are a favourite here.

Bananas - obviously hours of play value in being squidged through small fingers but they usually lick up the mess after ;-)

nobody else have kids who would live on bananas?

Erica, you must know you’ve done a good job if Erin prefers strawbs and grapes to chocolate! The Bean’s favourite are bananas, apple and strawberries. She too often survives on the bread-and-fruit diet of which one hears so little in childcare books. :)

“Dried dates … are they not really high in iron?” … hmm, I’m not sure. I’ve not got any in at the moment as they’re a bit pricier than the prunes, raisans, and apricots we keep in permanent stock as snacks …

… my mum has just deposited a HUGE quantity of black currants, red currants and rhubarb in my freezer so guess who’s making crumble and jam :D

Ok, HOW did I miss bananas?? Shame one me, Erin loves them!!

1. Banana’s
2. Grapes (chuck them in the freezer during summer - trust me)
3. Watermelon - preperation required, but a HUGE hit
4. Sultana’s - good for fine motor skills also
5. Tinned pineapple - easier to prepare!

Mine loves blueberries,strawberries, canteloup,honeydew and watermelons cubed up. I tgry to do the colors of the rainbow thing daily!! raisins are good. Be careful to look at dried fruit ingredients. Some have sulfates and a lot of fructose,not good. I found a dried berry mix w/cranberries,raspberries,blueberries and cherries without all that stuff at a store called Publix. Welches has a good cherry and cranberry without all the bad stuff too. She’ll eat 2 cups of fruit a day….it’s the green veggies that I can’t get in her. Any suggestions for veggies???
