Erin loves musical instruments and we have a pretty well stocked box. Here’s seven we have, and one that I’m going to add soon.
Maracas
We have a kid-sized wooden pair.
Castanets
Erin hasn’t quite figured these out yet, but I’m sure when she does, we’ll have hours of noisy fun!
Drum
This drum looks sooo much more fun than ours!
Bells
These remind me of the bells we used in the nativity play to symbolize the reindeer.
Rattles
These have a variety of bead type fillings.
And we’d like to add a recorder next!
Of course you don’t need to buy your musical instruments, make them instead.

Occarinas are easier on the ear than recorders, they don’t squeek so much if you blow them too hard. And they are much more little hand freindly.

We have recorders that I found at the dollar store, a harmonica, maracas (can only find one right now), drums, and my most recent, awesome purchase for $2, is a Fisher Price Puppy Xylophone — sorry if that isn’t spelled correctly — that has buttons and as well as a bone on a string to hit the keys with. It also has wheels underneath so it can be pulled and when they do that, it’s little tail wags. Very cute and they LOVE it. I like to make instruments too, like shakers, and such.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of occarinas, oh hang on, are they the little wooden tubes stuck together

A xylophone, I forgot about that, yes, I’d like to get a xylophone too!
Ocarina - small pendant shaped thing you hang round your neck (or not in the case of a small child obviously!) with 4 or 6 holes that you cover to make the notes. I got ours from here http://www.ocarina.co.uk/ In fact I don’t know anywhere else that sellls them. Perhaps not as cheap as a recorder but they sound much better.
What you are thinking of is PanPipes which are also lovely for little ones once they have got the hang of blowing across the top (like getting a note off a milk bottle) and aparently you can make yourself using drinking straws but I’ve not got round to trying that one yet.
And I’m going to risk being called a pedant now, stictly speaking those thigns with metal bars you hit aren’t xylophones they are glockenspiels although most toy companies don’t seem to know this…. a xylophone has wooden keys (and sound oh so much nicer!)
