Well, the first lot of forms for the open learning course went missing in the post. I rang the college again for duplicates which I completed and returned yesterday.

The overall cost of the course is £79. £69 will be paid by ILA Scotland and I must contribute the other £10.

In the meantime I have begun increasing my reading volume. I have completed and reviewed Babyproofing Your Marriage, and I am now reading a self development book called The Sedona Method. My next book will be Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. My aim is to read an array of books on different subjects and in varying genres to maximise my vocabulary and literary awareness.

I have also just found a great beginners French course delivered via podcast and pdf which is FREE. I have only listened to one lesson but it sounds very promising. I would really like to get to a good standard so that I can teach my daughter Erin, and (hopefully!) as a primary school teacher.

I have spoken about my views on learning languages here.

In the UK we are sorely lacking in this area, to change this we need to put more emphasis on foreign language, primary school teachers who have a decent knowledge of at least one other language could really assist in nurturing a love of languages from a young age, it is common knowledge that for many secondary school pupils it is just too late. I’m going to really commit myself to this course and hopefully I’ll see some positive results.

Oh Grrr! to forms going missing I hope it hasn’t meant you miss any course start deadlines?

At least you are getting your study pretty much paid for, that must help a bit. I know I couldn’t be doing my OU course without the grant I’ve got.

If you can get hold of a copy, the OU’s “Good Study Guide” might be a useful read for you, I’ve got both the Arts and the Science ones and they have made a huge difference to how I study. Looks like you are reading some interesting stuff though, looking forward to reading what you think about it.

(and finally….) I agree totally with your thoughts on languages. We don’t get it right in the UK and it does lead to us being looked on as arogant when we go abroad as our French and Spanish is so terrible that they assume we just don’t make the effort to learn and expect everyone to speak English. I love the look of the Podcast course, thanks for that link. i may well see if I can adapt that for Aprilia.

Hey t-bird, luckily it’s an ongoing open learning maths course, still, it’s a bit frustrating, I want to get started while I’m raring to go.

I’ll be sure to pick up the guide, and give some reviews on my reading :)
As for the French course I’m really enjoying it and feel it would be easily adapted for preschoolers, fab resource and I can’t believe it’s all free!!
