Activity #6 Introduction to Play Dough

1 March 2007 5 Comments

We had fun yesterday with our first foray into the world of play dough. With only one attempt at ingestion I thought it went pretty well.

Play-doh

Erin enjoyed investigating, throwing it on the floor (!) and ripping it into small pieces.

Squidging play-doh

The guide on the tub said two years upwards but having worked at a nursery prior to having Erin, I felt confident she would be fine with my full attention :D

You BOUGHT playdough??? but it’s so easy to make! (1 cup plain flour, half cup salt, stir together in a bowl, pour over 1 cup BOILING water, 1 tablespoon vege oil and a big glug of food colour then stir for all you are worth. You kneed it as soon as it’s bearable to touch which is mega soothing for your hands then once it’s safely cooled to pleasantly warm you hand it over!)

We still love play dough now and Aprilia is 6 (and I’m a lot older!!)

    I know, I know :) I am bad

We used to make it at the nursery but it didn’t last very long, perhaps I’ll give your recipe a try :)

if you want it to “keep” longer then add a tablespoon of cream of tartar, between that and the salt *nothing* will gorw in it! The recipe I use is by far the easiest one I’ve found, and doesn’t mean making an awful mess in a pan either (always a bonus – wink)

Have you tried her with corn flour and water yet? I bet she’s just about ready to enjoy that one!

I’ve seen recipes for peanut-butter based playdough too, great for small kids that might want to sample the dough :)
